CASE STUDY | Behaviour confidence and self-esteem improvement
YP was referred to Positive Futures Targeted Support Service to improve behaviour and confidence and self-esteem. YP lacked confidence and self-esteem. YP also struggled with their own identity and tended to follow the crowd which resulted in negative behaviour. YP acted in such ways to fit in with peer group and feel accepted by them.
The Intervention
Goals agreed with YP were:
- Improve behaviour and relationships in school.
- Build confidence and self esteem and increase self-awareness.
The Support provided was: –
- YP took part in 9 121 sessions, YP worked on confidence and self-esteem, this was explored through using the principles of CBT. This included identifying how thoughts influence feelings and behaviour, challenging negative thinking and the use of affirmations. YP created their own affirmation cards which they took away with them to practice.
- YP explored managing challenging behaviour and anger management coping strategies. YP created their own action plan to work towards positive steps to wellbeing including practicing kindness and taking up a hobby.
- YP discussed the impact of change and how they affect them emotionally.
- YP was offered to be signposted to Positive Futures however didnโt feel it was appropriate at this time.
Outcomes
- Increased self-awareness
- Behaviour improved
- Increased self-esteem and confidence
- School work improved
- YP learnt how to talk about feelings.
- YPโs confidence had grown in and outside school.
When YP started TSS they were on report, for fighting and constantly getting into arguments. YP had limited self-awareness and lacked confidence and self-esteem. At the end of the program, YP was no longer on report, their self-awareness increased which encouraged them to make positive choices.
