What was the issue?
Young people were experiencing instances of bullying in the social setting in which they played their trading card games. A need was identified that the young people required a safe space to engage and socialise through their shared interest in trading cards.
Support Provided
It was agreed that staff would plan and deliver an open access games night for young people between the ages of 8 -25. Although not specifically aimed at young people with Neurodiverse needs such as Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia, the session encompassed their needs, providing a highly structured and quiet environment around their specific interest of trading cards.
A 2-hour Games night was designed and delivered to young people occurring every Thursday. After planning and liaising with the young people, resources such as board games and specific trading cards, such as Vanguard, Yu Gi Oh and Pokémon were purchased and made available based on the young people’s suggestions. Food and drink were also provided on these evenings to support children and young people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
Outcome
As a result of the weekly activity session, over the course of a 3-month period the games night was regularly attended by on average 20 young people. Providing them with a safe space to engage in their hobby.
Impact
Parents and guardians of the young people in attendance noted that the games night has provided young people with a regular opportunity to socialise and meet other young people.
