Case Study | Finding it hard to meet people and avoiding conflict at home
What was the reason for the referral?
Young person (YP) finds it “challenging to meet new people”.
YP looking for “respite”, away from previous conflict at home.
Supporting YP to participate in extra-curricular activities.
YP not attending school as finding it “overwhelming”.
Goals
To support YP in improving confidence and self-esteem
To help YP build on skills in order to make new friendships and form positive relationships with others.
What support was provided?
10 1-2-1 sessions took place supporting in building on personal confidence and self-esteem.
PF staff introduced YP to PF activities so as young person could get a feel for the environment.
YP was supported to attend boxing sessions outside of PF to continue to build their confidence.
Encouraging YP to use coping mechanisms/strategies and grounding techniques when they are feeling overwhelmed.
Outcomes
YP attending PF activities without the support of Positive Futures staff and made friends.
YP attended a number of trips during PF’s Summer Activity timetable.
YP gained confidence and will now speak up for herself and on behalf of her friends who don’t have the confidence to do so.
Through working with the PF worker YP built up the confidence to return to school and also made a new friend
Increased scores in Goal Based Outcome and Mind Star baseline assessments. YP scored themselves 4/10 on the first GBO assessment; this changed to 8/10 when completing exit scores.
On entry with the Mind Star, YP scored themselves 24 overall, which increased to 27 on exit – this included specific increases in self-esteem by +1 and an increase of feelings & emotions of +2
Impact
YP advised that “Positive Futures has helped me be more confident in myself and in situations I would normally find challenging”.
YP advised on numerous occasions that she “feels better” and “more confident” .
