From Struggle to Stability

When this young person was referred to Positive Futures, daily life felt overwhelming. Home was described as chaotic and unpredictable, and school had become increasingly challenging. Difficulties with emotional regulation often led to anger, leaving lessons, and refusing instructions. Beneath these behaviours sat low self-esteem and deeply held negative beliefs about themselves.

Through our Targeted Support Service, the young person engaged in 13 one-to-one sessions delivered using a trauma-informed approach. The work focused on understanding emotions, building healthier coping strategies, developing empathy, and making safer decisions. Sessions also explored confidence-building, challenging negative self-talk, and recognising personal strengths. Support around internet safety helped address conflict linked to social media.

The intervention extended beyond direct sessions. Positive Futures worked closely with school and social care, attending Child Protection and Child in Need meetings to ensure a coordinated and consistent approach. Support was also offered within the family home, including guidance and signposting to parenting courses to help strengthen boundaries and improve stability.

Gradually, meaningful change became evident. A Mind Star assessment showed an increase from 16 to 25, reflecting progress in emotional wellbeing, relationships and self-esteem. Professionals observed improved engagement, and participation in a positive activity session at The Climbing Hangar supported confidence and resilience.

Most importantly, the young person recognised the difference themselves. Reflecting on the journey, they shared:

The family has since stepped down from Child Protection to Child in Need and is now supported through Family Help, demonstrating the increased stability that has been achieved.

This journey highlights the impact of consistent, trauma-informed and multi-agency support in helping young people build resilience, confidence and a stronger foundation for the future.
