Case Study | Dealing with Traumatic Events

We recently offered support to a young person who, along with their family, had witnessed a traumatic event that had impacted themselves and their family all in different ways, and had left the young person’s sibling with life-changing injuries.

The young person was referred to us for support with their education and school life, improve their handling of their emotions, and to provide guidance through a difficult period

We provided 20 one-on-one sessions, catered to the young person’s needs, focused on:

Confidence and self-esteem
Neurodiversity
Self-awareness
Effective coping strategies
Socialisation
Emotional regulation
Relationship building
CBT
Positive mind set
Receptiveness to change

In school, the young person has remained in an alternate provision setting, where they have built positive relationships with their teachers, seen a reduction in behavioural incidents, an increase in positive rewards and less exclusions.

The young person now also has a better understanding and more control of their emotions and is more able to communicate these feelings to their parents for support.

Our Targeted Support Team also referred the case to our Family Support worker. Holistically, and in collaboration with the young person’s school, support was provided which the family actively engaged with.

There are now positive talks from the young person in regards to moving back into the main body of the school for their education.

Following the support provided by both the Targeted Support Team and the Family Support worker, the father of the young person said: ’My son has really benefited from working with Positive Futures. He has learnt loads and is implementing coping mechanisms he has been given to help himself when needed. Cannot wish for him to have a better worker than Karen, they have formed an amazing bond.’

The young person stated: ‘The support has helped me build positive relationships in school, helped me communicate my emotions better with my parents and I have tried new things with new people over the summer.’
