Case Study | Social inclusion in the community
What was the reason for the referral?
Young person (YP) was referred to Positive Futures to improve their “social inclusion in the community”, though finding space and time away from home, to engage in activities that they enjoy.
For YP to develop interests in new activities, which would enable them to make connections with other peers.
Goals
For YP to gain confidence in themselves, join new activities and make new friends.
What support was provided?
- 6 1-2-1 sessions took place covering topics such as family dynamic and friendships.
- YP was a fairly quiet individual, but had interests in boxing and Pokemon so this was the topic of conversation on each session that was completed as YP felt most comfortable discussing this.
- Some work at the Climbing Hangar, specifically involving ‘comfort, stretch and panic’ conversation.
- Referred parents to ADHD Foundation for support around ASD.
Outcomes
- YP continues to attend boxing sessions. YP finds it easy to talk about boxing as this is now something that he really enjoys.
- YP has made a new friendship base.
- Same outcome score of the Mind Star, with an increase in ‘use of your time’ and ‘healthy lifestyle’ which could suggest that YP recognises that boxing has helped him to achieve his initial outcome.
- +1 increase in Goal Based Outcome
Impact
- YP advised that he had made new friends at the boxing club and hoped to see them outside of boxing one day.
- Parents reported that YP is happier since attending boxing. Mum reported that YP “hasn’t had a meltdown for long time” and has not been “giving cheek”.
- Since attending boxing, Mum has reported via text, “I’ve seen a major difference, he’s so confident and he has calmed in a sort of sense” … “I’m over the moon with him”.
