CASE STUDY | Exploitation and ASB

YP involved in ASB in local community. and it was felt they were at risk of exploitation due to the times they were out unsupervised.

The Intervention

• 19 1-2-1 sessions took place. Themes of sessions included:
  • The impact of ASB on me and my community
  • County lines and the presence of exploiters in their community including their tactics
  • Healthy lifestyles
  • Emotional regulation
  • Interpersonal effectiveness
• We also engaged with their mum and included her in some sessions.

Outcomes

• YP has not engaged in ASB and is not motivated to do so anymore.
• Their current focus is on building their physical fitness and strength and progressing with their education.
• They rated their goal of “not engaging in ASB or putting myself at risk” as 9/10 by the time this intervention completed.
• We introduced YP to local enrichment opportunities. They now commit to 2 sports based activates in their locality in a structured setting. They are using this opportunity to build their self-esteem which in turn allows them to confidently avoid negative influences.
• Their mum has recently accepted the support of a Family Support Worker so she too can be supported in continuing to make improvements which will further benefit YP.
• We have also communicated closely with their school Head of Year and deputy. They have agreed to offer them in school counselling to further increase their emotional regulation; lack of which has caused numerous detentions and temporary exclusions.
• YP is reporting a much higher level of confidence socially. They can avoid negative influences and is less vulnerable to peer pressure.
• Their health has improved, and they are reporting much higher energy levels.
• Having been socialised to 1-2-1 work and taking responsibility for their lifestyle and future, YP, historically had been very guarded and closed off to talking with teachers and professionals. This intervention has allowed their perception of professionals to change – they now accept support and has agreed to counselling in school. YP has agreed to be referred to a Transitions Project which will now support them to improve their educational attainment and attendance.
