CASE STUDY | Struggling with school and emotions, YP with Autism Spectrum Disorder

YP has ASD and is really struggling with the social and environmental demands of the school environment.  He is ‘easily wound up’ and therefore a target for other children.  He feels misunderstood by adults and peers.  He gets very anxious in unfamiliar environments.  His school attendance is poor.  YP has significant difficulties with sleep. 

The Intervention

YP wanted to gain confidence, engage in activities outside of the house, and possibly make new friends.

• Six one to one support sessions were delivered in school.
• Young person was also offered activities outside of school at Positive Futures.
• Discussed possibilities of Young Person attending activities with other providers and encouraged him to return to Boxing Classes at a gym he used to attend or at a new gym closer to his home.

Outcomes

• Next steps for the individual were for him to start attending boxing classes once again at either his old Amateur Boxing Club (Rydal) or Anfield Amateur Boxing Club closer to home.
• RCADS scores show a reduction in his anxiety levels at the end of the intervention compared to the start of the interventions.
• Young person had a positive male role model to confide in and talk through issues with.
• Young person was able to discuss family issues that had been bothering him and explore feelings and emotions to be able to process these in a healthier manner.

Young person now feels more comfortable speaking to their parent/grandmother about issues affecting him.
