Family Support Case Study – mum/daughter relationship

Reason for referral

Relationship between Mum and daughter is fractured, as daughter has not attended school since Autumn term 23 and was at risk of being permanently excluded from education provision.

Daughter was struggling to manage daily life with lack of structure and manage her neurodiversity. Furthermore, daughter was associating with negative peers, she was not adhering to boundaries and was not coming home when expected.

In addition the family had experienced a family bereavement.

Goals agreed

Provide emotional support for Mum.

Support for Mum to have a better understanding of daughter’s needs.

Support Mum to repair the relationship with her daughter.

Improve communication in the family home and reduce conflict in the family home.

Support provided

7 1-2-1 sessions took place.

Contact in between sessions to check in with Mum and ensure she felt supported.

Support for Mum to attend social care meetings.

Support for Mum to access GP and bereavement counselling.

Safety planning on occasions when daughter was missing from home ensuring Mum reported to the police when necessary.

Work completed on boundaries and communication.

Outcomes

Initial assessment scores compared to exit scores:

Family Star initial score 67 exit score 79

Risk protective initial score 49 exit score 49

Goal based outcomes initial score 3 exit score 7

The above scores demonstrate an improvement in how Mum can meet and understand her daughter’s needs. Mum feels confident in managing her daughter’s behaviors and there has been a reduction in conflict and missing episodes. Daughter is being supported by external agencies and there is a plan in place to reintegrate her to education. Daughter is also receiving intervention for her mental health and neurodiversity.

Mum is on a waiting list to access bereavement counselling.

Impact

Mum was grateful for the support offered from Positive Futures Targeted Support Service and the extended offer from Family Support Service.

“The support from FSW has been a great help, especially since our family bereavement which was a great loss to our family and support network. FSW has listened to me and supported our family.”
