Staying Safe and Having Fun on Bonfire Night – Tips from Positive Futures Liverpool

Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night, is an exciting time of year when we come together to celebrate with bonfires and fireworks. However, it’s crucial to remember that safety should be a top priority. Positive Futures Liverpool is here to provide some essential tips and guidance to ensure that young people can have a fantastic Bonfire Night while staying safe.

  1. Attending Organised Events

One of the safest ways to enjoy Bonfire Night is by attending organised events held by local authorities or community organisations. These events are closely monitored, ensuring that fireworks are handled safely, and professional displays are awe-inspiring.

  1. Firework Safety

If you plan to host your own fireworks display, always follow these safety guidelines:

  1. An adult must purchase fireworks from reputable vendors and ensure they meet safety standards. b. Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from flammable materials. c. Ensure a responsible adult follows the instructions on the packaging carefully, and designate an adult to be in charge. d. Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of emergencies. e. Light fireworks at arm’s length and never go back to a firework that didn’t ignite properly. f. Always supervise young people around fireworks and sparklers, and ensure they stand at a safe distance.
  1. Bonfire Safety

Building a bonfire can be a fun tradition, but it should be done with utmost care and under responsible adult supervision:

  1. Construct the bonfire at a safe distance from buildings, fences, and trees. b. Never use flammable liquids to start the fire. c. Keep a bucket of water or a hose close by for emergencies. d. Ensure young people are supervised and understand the dangers of getting too close to the fire.
  1. Sparkler Safety

Sparklers can be a source of great enjoyment for young people, but they can also be dangerous if not handled properly:

  1. Only give sparklers to children who are old enough to understand their proper use. b. Provide a container of sand or water for the safe disposal of used sparklers. c. Instruct children to hold sparklers at arm’s length and away from their body.
  1. Dress Appropriately

Make sure to dress warmly and wear clothing that covers arms and legs. This will help protect against sparks or embers from the bonfire or fireworks. It’s also a good idea to wear gloves to avoid burns.

  1. Stay in a Group

Encourage young people to enjoy Bonfire Night in the company of friends and family. Staying in a group ensures that everyone can look out for each other and respond to any safety concerns promptly.

  1. Pets and Wildlife

Bonfire Night can be distressing for pets and wildlife due to the loud noises of fireworks. Keep your pets indoors, and make sure they are in a secure and comfortable environment during the celebrations.

Conclusion

Bonfire Night is a time for celebration and coming together, but safety must always be the top priority. By following these tips and guidelines from Positive Futures Liverpool, young people can have a memorable and safe Bonfire Night. Enjoy the festivities responsibly, and create lasting, positive memories for years to come!
